The Ins and Outs of a 90-Minute Reiki Session
If you’re new to Reiki (or maybe it’s been a minute since your last treatment), it’s natural to wonder what you should expect from your upcoming Reiki session.
In this blog, I’ll break down what to expect before, during, and after your session. I’ll also explain what happens during the energy healing itself including:
- What I (as your Reiki healer) do
- How the energy works to heal you
- What you’re likely to experience and feel
It’s important to remember that energy isn’t bound by time or space. It doesn’t matter if our session is virtual or in-person — the healing energy of Reiki will always go where it’s most needed.
Before Your Reiki Session
We will be connecting either through Zoom or over the phone (whichever you’re most comfortable with).
We always start with intentions.
Before we begin the Reiki session, I’ll ask what area you’d like to focus on. Whatever you’re concerned about — physically, emotionally, or mentally — we’ll set the intention to work on it and facilitate healing with Reiki.
Preparing your body & mind & environment
It’s important to be hydrated for your Reiki healing session, so it’s always a good idea to drink some water.
The beauty of Reiki is that you could be anywhere in the world and still receive healing.
And the virtual Reiki that I offer allows you to be in a space where you feel most comfortable. For many people, this might be their bedroom or living room. But it could be anywhere that you feel relaxed — for some of us that might be outside at the beach or in a park.
Most people choose to be somewhere in their house and they turn off their lights. Your eyes may be closed, or half-closed. Whichever is more comfortable for you.
Finding the right posture.
We want the healing energy of Reiki to be able to flow through your body uninterrupted.
To best facilitate this, I’ll instruct you to keep your arms and legs uncrossed and resting comfortably. You can choose to do this lying down or sitting down, whichever is more comfortable for you.
If you need a little extra support to feel comfortable, you’re welcome to place a pillow underneath your knees to support your back.
Beyond these simple environment and posture recommendations, all you need to do is relax and allow yourself to receive the healing energy.
During Your Reiki Session
1. What I Do During the Reiki Session
I conduct the session from my room — which I cleanse with healing energy before each new session.
Once we feel ready to begin, I’ll start with meditative music and we’ll take a few relaxing breaths together.
Then I begin my work.
The Reiki healing energy works through connections that are not bound by time or space.
I build a connection between you and me. And I also build a connection between you and the tapestry that represents you within my space.
Once this is done, the tapestry acts as a conduit for the healing energy.
Depending on you and your intentions, I use a combination of sound therapy, crystal healing, and the Reiki energy itself to balance your chakras and cleanse your body of energy blockages.
2. What the Energy Does During the Reiki Session
Energy is everywhere and everything. “Reiki” is the name of the universal energy that gives us life and vitality
Sometimes that energy gets unbalanced or even blocked within us. When this happens, the energy cannot flow through us as it naturally should. This results in physical, emotional, or mental suffering. It can also result in negative life circumstances like unhealthy relationships or financial troubles.
Reiki energy healing is the process of unblocking and re-balancing our energy.
During your Reiki session, the Reiki Practitioner (that’s me!) uses intuition and training to send healing energy to your body.
As long as you are relaxed and opened to it, this energy will work within you to re-balance and unblock your energy. Doing so helps reduce any internal or external suffering.
3. What You Do During the Reiki Session
Your job is to open your mind and body to the relaxing sensations (and to try not to overthink).
You may feel gentle sensations like tingling, warmth, or slight chills. Some clients experience what feels like a slight lifting movement underneath them. This is often how it feels when Reiki energy flows through your body, and it’s totally normal and common.
When Reiki clears out energy blockages, there is a possibility that you might feel some emotions come up. It doesn’t happen for everyone, but crying is another completely normal reaction during a Reiki session.
The most common experience during a Reiki session is a sense of calm. Most people experience calm wash over them as their tension is released. You might even fall asleep. This is also okay because the energy can heal deeper when you are in this state.
After Your Reiki Session
I will slowly end the healing portion of your session by gently calling your name and lowering the music.
You should take your time to open your eyes and get up. You should also be aware of moving slowly to avoid getting up abruptly after such a relaxing experience.
Once your eyes are open and you’re sitting up, we will review my findings. I’ll communicate any messages from Spirit to you. I’ll also give you tips for following up with self-care after your session so that you get the most benefit from your healing session.
Many clients often report feeling lighter and much more relaxed. You might experience relief from pain, more confidence, and the feeling that you’ve gained clarity on a situation. Feelings of motivation in the subsequent days are very common as well.
The healing energy will continue to transform in your body and aura for the next few days so be mindful of any changes.
You can reach out to me after your session to check-in or ask any questions you have.
